This month, farmers and community members gathered at Shekinah Farms’ demonstration farm in Belem, Kumbo, to celebrate a successful huckleberry harvest. The harvest represents months of hard work, learning, and collaboration among farmers committed to improving food production and household nutrition through sustainable agriculture.
Huckleberry is one of the most widely consumed traditional leafy vegetables in the Northwest Region of Cameroon. Valued for its rich flavor and nutritional benefits, it plays an important role in household diets and local markets. For many families, huckleberry is not only a source of nourishment but also a crop that contributes to income generation and food security. The success of this harvest demonstrates what is possible when farmers have access to practical training, improved farming techniques, and opportunities to learn from one another.
The Harvest Begins
The demonstration plots were vibrant with healthy green leaves ready for harvest. Farmers carefully selected mature leaves while discussing the growth of the crop and the lessons learned throughout the season.
This year’s crop benefited from good soil preparation, organic fertility management, proper plant spacing, and regular field monitoring. These practices contributed to stronger plant growth and improved yields across the demonstration site.
For many participants, the harvest was an opportunity to see firsthand how simple, sustainable practices can significantly improve crop performance while reducing production costs.
