Last weekend, Shekinah Farms welcomed families, community members, and local partners to a Healthy Harvest workshop designed to promote nutrition education, home gardening, and healthy eating practices.

The event brought together participants of all ages to learn practical ways to grow nutritious food, prepare healthy meals, and strengthen household food security. Through hands-on demonstrations and interactive discussions, families gained valuable skills that can help them make healthier food choices while increasing access to fresh produce.

For many participants, the workshop was also an opportunity to discover traditional African vegetables and learn about their nutritional benefits.

Learning Through Hands-On Activities

One of the most popular sessions focused on home gardening techniques. Participants learned how small gardens can provide fresh vegetables for their families while reducing food costs.

Topics included:

  • Starting a home vegetable garden
  • Soil preparation and composting
  • Water conservation techniques
  • Growing nutrient-rich vegetables
  • Managing pests naturally

These activities encouraged participants to ask questions, share experiences, and gain confidence in their ability to grow food for their households.

Exploring Nutrition Through Traditional Foods

The workshop also highlighted the nutritional value of African vegetables and culturally relevant foods.

Participants learned how vegetables such as huckleberry, bitterleaf, amaranth, and other nutrient-rich crops contribute to healthy diets. Discussions focused on preparing balanced meals, increasing vegetable consumption, and making healthy choices using locally available foods.

Fresh African vegetables were showcased as part of nutrition education activities during the workshop.

Many attendees shared family recipes and traditional food preparation methods, creating an opportunity for cultural exchange and learning.

Knowledge Grows When Communities Come Together

One of the most inspiring moments of the day was listening to participants share their own gardening experiences, challenges, and successes.

These conversations highlighted the power of community learning. Farmers, parents, youth, and elders each brought valuable knowledge and perspectives that enriched the workshop experience.

At Shekinah Farms, we believe that knowledge grows when it is shared. By creating spaces where people can learn from one another, we help strengthen community resilience and promote long-term health and well-being.

Growing Healthier Communities Together

Building stronger food systems requires more than producing crops. It requires empowering individuals, supporting families, and creating opportunities for communities to take ownership of their health and nutrition.

The Healthy Harvest workshop reflects Shekinah Farms’ commitment to advancing nutrition education, sustainable agriculture, and community development.
